Treating Skin Problems in Dogs with Food Therapy (A Case Study)

Our Focus Group

This particular client had two American Pit Bull Terriers; both Pit bulls were suffering from persistent skin problems though they were on an all natural, homemade food. The client is looking for nutritional advice to treat the dogs’ skin problems and keep them as healthy as possible. The client is currently feeding a raw diet consisting: Chicken Quarters, Cubed Beef, Fish oil, and a commercial multi-vitamin.

Skin Problems in Pit bulls

Pit bulls, as well as some other breeds, are prone to severe skin problems that are notcommon to other dogs. Owners of pit bulls often complain of recurring skin problems such as rashes, hives, and persistent itching and scratching. These conditions can range from mild scratching problems to chronic cases in which vigorous scratching leads to hematomas and requires surgery. The so-called “blue breeds” which include pit bulls are known to have especially troublesome skin problems, caused by a tendency toward auto-immunity and nutrient deficiency problems.  It is important to remember that the presents of skin problems in dogs is a very accurate indicator of general health.

The Cause of Skin Problems in Dogs

Skin problems in dogs are mainly caused by allergic reactions, poor nutrition, parasites, skin infections and internal problems. Nutrition plays a huge role in a dog’s skin health. Poor nutrition is the main cause of dryness, irritation, and excessive shedding and it can affect dogs of all ages. Poor nutrition can also lead to low immunity, giving way for parasitic infestations and allergic reactions to occur.

Nutritional Recommendation for Chronic Skin Problems in DogsDog Skin Problems

Since feeding a raw or cooked whole food diet is the best option for canine nutrition and improving skin health, we recommended a more balanced version of their current diet, which was easily achieved with one of Puptection’s dehydrated pre-mixes. Our dehydrated foods are a perfect way to make any diet complete and balanced and have been clinically proven to naturally reduce negative immune response in the body through the elimination of indigestible starches like sugar, flour, yeast, corn, and other by-products commonly used in commercial and even prescription foods. Also in this particular case, the dogs required their diet to possess a high level of protein and an easily digestible form of vitamins and minerals from fruits and vegetables. Our suggested percentages were: 50% protein, 30% fruits and vegetables, 15% grain/seed/oils, and 5% herbal supplements.

Best Supplements for Skin Problems in Dogs

We also recommended a number of detoxifying supplements to kick-start the body into “healing” mode. To support the detoxification process, the body requires a variety of minerals and nutrients. If these nutrients are in low supply or the body is malnourished, the toxins are not properly excreted and remain in circulation. These un-neutralized toxins can be stored in body tissues such as the skin, muscles, brain, nervous system, or colon and can cause chronic skin allergies, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, and weakness in dogs.

Dog Skin ProblemsAnother common nutritional issue that had to be addressed was mineral deficiency. Since feeding bones (raw or smoked) has become taboo, many dogs suffer from a lack of minerals in the system. A natural mineral supplement is a great way to support the health of the skin and other bodily functions such as digestion, circulation, and the repair of tissue. Our patented Purifying Clay Mix W/ Calcium Bentonite Clay not only leeches toxins from the vital organs and blood, but replaces them with 60+ trace minerals and electrolytes like calcium, silica, phosphorous, potassium, sulphur, iron, copper, and magneseium to balance thyroid function, increase bone and joint health, stop diarrhea & constipation, prevent waste odor, and naturally repair cellular damage. Our clay mix is milled and formulated especially for animals.

In 4-6 weeks time, with the help of a diet change and the recommended supplements, the previous skin conditions including rashes, hives, itching, and scratching were nearly nonexistent. The client also saw positive changes in their sleep-wake cycle and reported that they seemed to be happier and have more energy. This is proof that nutrition does in fact improve quality of life.
